Still Life Photography, Inspired by The Dutch Masters
Based in East Suffolk, Fine Art Photographer Shelley Nott’s growing reputation for her still life photographs comes from her interpretation of the traditional genre but incorporating modern day technology. Collectors of her work span the globe often mixing her photographs with still life paintings.
Shelley finds influences in many places. From the Dutch and Flemish Masters of the 17th and 18th centuries, to Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1746-1800) and Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986).
Collections
You can purchase her photographs as very limited edition prints. She prints them on museum quality cotton rag paper using archival quality inks. They are then framed in simple, narrow aluminium frames – matt black for the dark photographs and matt silver colour for the lighter versions. However, if you have a particular site for one of her photographs, she will be very happy to discuss your requirements.
Exhibitions
During the year there are opportunities to experience and buy Shelley’s limited edition photographs. Visitors to her exhibitions often say that seeing the photographs in “real life” is so much better than viewing them on a computer screen.
Most of her pieces are printed using archival inks on aluminium as an homage to those Dutch and Flemish Masters who would sometimes paint on copper for their most favoured clients.
Alternatively, she will print on museum quality cotton rag paper, again using archival quality inks. These are then mounted and placed behind non-reflective glass in narrow aluminium frames.
Welcome
Using only window light, each of her photographs can take many hours (or even days) to create. The natural light gives them a greater depth and exceptional colour and they often include the symbolism of the Dutch and Flemish Masters. Although she now uses digital photography she brings the practice and ethos she used when behind a large format film camera.
She also does work to commission, often photographing her clients’ favourite thing be that a flower, food or personal object.
Her work is divided between her flower pieces and still lifes and she shows at a number of venues throughout the year. Please visit her Exhibitions page to see her exhibition dates and locations. Visitors to her exhibitions continually confirm that her work is even more spectacular when seen on the wall than on a computer screen.
She continues to research her subject, which has taken her, so far, to Holland, Denmark, Cambridge, Norwich and of course, London.
