Still Life with Four Quinces

The quince is symbolic of love, romance, fertility and abundance. In its hard, raw state the quince emits an intense aroma but is  impossible to eat. Slow cooking releases its sweet flavour symbolising patience and temperance. It predates the modern apple and is sometimes considered to be the original forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.
