As late Winter transitions into early Spring the garden is full of change. The greens start to become more intense and more visible. The early flowers are raising their heads with the promise of better weather.
In a cream jug harking back to the owner’s childhood, these hints of changing seasons are there. Winter heather is mixed with flowering rosemary (the plant associated with remembrance). There’s a hint of deep pink hyacinth which have started to break through the sodden earth.
Snowdrops are the ultimate symbol of hope and Resurrection, appearing each January and February heralding the coming Spring. Another bloom sometimes thought of in this way is the humble crocus.
The Narcissus is another flower linked to the Resurrection with their sunny yellow colour arriving yet again. They brashly announce the change of seasons and flash their colour around the garden sometimes popping up in places you don’t remember planting.
Early Spring is also a time of comings and goings. Birds on migration to or from the UK start their journeys and the white feather alludes to this. On the right are white pebbles and a shell that helps us think of the sunny days to come spent on the beach. Again, the shell speaks of transience, it once held a living creature who has moved on.
It is such an uplifting time. The days are getting longer, the sun warmer and we start to leave the cold, wet, dark days behind us.
